Summer Time Whirl-a-Gig
Created by Julie Jones
Supplies needed:
Construction paper, patterned paper, cardstock, etc.
Glue
Scissors or paper trimmer
Straws
Long brads
Step 1: Cut paper into squares. Any size will do. I cut my paper into 6 x 6 inch squares. I cut a piece for the front and a piece for the back. If your paper is flimsy, it is best to glue two sheets together this way so that your whirl-a-gig has more stability.
Step 2: Fold your paper in half and then in half again so that you can see four boxes from the creases in your folds after you unfold the paper.
Step 3: Using your scissors, cut diagonally from each corner of the square to ALMOST the center of the square. Refer to photo 1.
Step 4: After all four corners have been cut, fold in each corner to the middle of the square to make your whirl-a-gig. Attach with a small dab of glue.
Step 5: Insert a long brad into the center of the whirl-a-gig. (The longer brads can be found in office supply stores or in craft stores)
Step 6: Insert the brad into the straw and bend the ends of the brad back to stabilize it. Be sure not to secure the brad too tightly. You need to leave room for the whirl-a-gig to blow in the breeze.
These cute little whirl-a-gigs are super easy to make. They will give your kids something to do when the summer boredom bug hits your house!
