The Truth Hurts
Kids say the darndest things. Sometimes they just tell the truth. Especially when they’re three.
My oldest son and I had a day together a few weeks ago, and I took the opportunity to do a little shopping with only one child. As I perused the racks and scoured the store for deals I couldn’t pass up, Old Navy was busy tempting my child with little balls and toys around every corner. Using my best mommy judgment, I had put Will in a cart where he couldn’t reach all those balls. Otherwise, Old Navy might have looked like the inside of a pin ball machine. The restraints of the cart kept Will from grabbing the toys, but it sure didn’t keep him from asking for them. Over and over. I said no a couple of times, then I explained further.
“Will, you have more toys than you know what to do with. You do NOT need another one.”
He actually accepted this explanation and did not ask again. Shocking, I know. To me as well. A few minutes later as I was quietly celebrating $9 jeans that actually fit, he said he was ready to go, that Old Navy was boring. I told him that Mommy was looking for some clothes, and I was almost finished. And in a moment of clarity and wisdom, he responded.
“Mommy, you have more clothes than you know what to do with. You do NOT need any more clothes.”
