New Hormonal Options for Contraception
by Dr. Bruce Glover, OB-GYN Women's Group PA

For years contraceptive methods have remained fairly stable. Barrier methods and oral contraceptives have been the basic options. Recently other hormonal options have become available. Ortho Evra is a transdermal method that uses hormonal absorption through the skin. The patch lasts a week at a time so there is not a pill to remember to take daily. It also should not be effected by taking antibiotics. Another method is the Nuvaring which uses absorption thru the vagina to allow a lower dose of hormone to bring about effective contraception. The vaginal ring is changed every three weeks. It’s easy for the woman to insert and to remove. Both of these methods are as effective as the pill. The cost is similar to name brand pills. They are designed to make life easier for the busy woman.
