Your Child's Health: Dr. James Cheshier

Colds, Flu, and Your Child
by Dr. James Cheshier

This is the cold season with the flu and RSV season is not far behind. It would be good to look at some symptoms of colds and best treatments.

The main symptoms of a cold are runny nose (cloudy or clear), some cough, occasionally fever, decreased appetite and decreased activity. Most children usually continue to take fluids ok.

There are only supporting treatments for colds. Rest, fluids, Tylenol and occasional antihistamines or decongestants. Humidifiers have only limited benefit. It is very important to remember that colds generally last 5 to 7 days (not 2-3). If colds persist longer than 6-7 days or have excessive fever or marked decrease intake a visit to the doctor is in order to rule out secondary problems. To help prevent colds, eat well, take vitamins, wash hands and get proper rest.
