"Why can't I go on my toes?"
It is much easier to explain why a child should not go on pointe or toe shoes then to explain when and why. A child's development cannot be standardized so therefore hard and fast rules cannot apply.
First: Is the child showing signs of secondary sexual characteristics?
Second: Is the child's posture correct?
Third: Strength. Can all exercises be done on demi-pointe with the supporting knee absolutely straight? Is the weight lifted off the feet?
Fourth: Feet. Are the feet free from any tendency to sickle in or out? Is the ankle flexible?
Too early pointe work is laying the foundation for great risk to the feet, knee joint and even the spine.
